Roof Problems From Exposure to the Sun and UV Rays

Austin and the rest of Central Texas is known for its warm, sunny weather. Property owners have to choose their roofing material carefully in sunny locations if they want to get the longest lifespan out of their roof. Just as sun protection factor is a measure of how well sunscreen protects skin cells from UVB radiation, there are measurements for gauging how different materials are naturally protected against visible light as well as UV rays that can't be seen.

The big problem with the sun's rays is it can degrade the protective coating of a roof and cause premature aging of the materials, even changing their chemical makeup. When that happens UV light will do even more harm, eventually damaging the roofing materials to the point the underlayment is exposed.

Peeling
Peeling is another commonality between skin damage and roof damage that's caused by the sun. In the roofing world this happens when the clear protective coating is damaged and begins peeling off. This will cause noticeable discoloration as well.

Blistering

What could have been a few minor repairs could turn into a complete roof replacement if sun exposure and UV radiation damage isn't fixed as soon as it's detected.

Regular roof inspections are an effective way of catching UV damage early to minimize the problems and correct them. A professional roofer with experience will be able to spot the first signs of sun damage with a visual inspection. If the signs are there, the roofer can inspect further to see if the damage is more extensive.

Repairing, Re-coating or Replacing Damaged Shingles and Roofing Materials

The recommended solutions for correcting UV and sun damage all come down to how badly the roof has been affected and the type of roofing you have. In some cases, re-coating the roof is enough to restore it and prevent further issues. However, you may also need to repair or replace roofing that has cracked, broken or is damaged beyond repair. This could mean replacing a small portion or the entire roof.

If you do need to replace the roofing material, make sure the new roofing has a UV protective coating and/or reflective granules.
