Signs of Improper Roof Installation

Most reputable roofing companies will do a sufficient job getting a roof installed properly, but that isn't always the case. It isn't an issue of poor communication on the client's part. Some telltale signs of a bad roofing job are:


  • Water Stains on the Ceiling

    One of the first signs that the roofing needs attention is seeing water stains on the ceiling. There's a very good chance roof leaks caused the water stains. A number of things can go wrong during the roof installation that lead to leaks.

  • Roof Deck Rot

    This is an obvious sign of an improperly installed roof. More specifically, something is wrong with the moisture barrier covering the roof deck, which has caused it to get wet. Wet, rotted roof decking can compromise the entire roofing system.

  • Damaged or Missing Shingles

    The roof's shingles are the outermost layer of protection. When a new roof has damaged or missing shingles and there hasn't been a recent storm with hail and high winds, it's most likely due to bad roof installation. Roof repair is needed quickly when shingles are damaged or missing because they increase the chance of a leak and moisture damage.

  • Shingles Have an Uneven Appearance

    Uneven shingles can also be an indicator of installation errors. The roof shingles should have a flat, uniform appearance when the installation is done correctly. This isn't just an aesthetic issue. When the shingles are uneven it can allow moisture to penetrate through.

  • Roof Condensation

    When things are done correctly and there's proper attic ventilation, you shouldn't see signs of roof condensation. Just as you see on the outside of a glass, condensation can form on the underside of the roof and on surfaces in the attic if there's inadequate insulation and ventilation.

  • Mold Growth

    The first sign of a problem is often mold growth. Mold can grow quickly when moisture is collecting on the roof. Why the water isn't draining properly is the real question. But if it's happening soon after a new installation it's likely because some part of the roofing system wasn't installed correctly.

  • Damaged Drip Edge

    The average homeowner isn't aware that some roofing companies will cut costs on materials going so far as to install old flashing. Reused flashing might be okay during a roof replacement if the flashing is in great condition and the homeowner knows, but only new materials should be used during a new roof installation.

  • Overdriven Nails

    Simply driving the nails in too far can cause damage, and it's more common that homeowners realize. It's a rookie mistake that a new roofing contractor makes as well as contractors that are hurrying through the installation. When the nail goes through the roofing material it can cause roof leaks, loosen the shingles and even void the materials warranty.
