What Causes Clogged Downspouts and Gutters
The gutters catch rainwater as it runs off the roof, but a lot of debris can be washed down with it. This includes granules when asphalt roofing needs repair. Leaves, trash and other debris can also end up in the gutters when there are strong winds or a storm.
What a Clogged Gutter Downspout Looks Like
When there are clogged downspouts and gutters you'll notice that rainwater isn't flowing properly along with a few other signs.
- One of the early signs is standing water on the roof.
- You'll also notice little drainage out of the downspouts.
- Water will overflow over the edge of the gutters.
- Gutters are beginning to sag.
- Stained siding just below the gutters.
- Plant growth or moss inside the gutters.
- The smell of rotting plants and debris.
- During the winter there may be icicles forming on the gutters.
If you see any of these signs it's an indication you need to look in the gutters to see if debris has collected.

How to Unclog Gutters
There are a few steps to take to clear out accumulated debris and get your gutter system flowing again. Taking a systematic approach is best to ensure you get the gutters completely cleared out.
Clean the Roof
The first step to unclogging gutters is to clean the roof. If not, you may soon end up with more debris in the gutters. Use a broom or leaf blower to get all the debris off the roof. Remove any twigs or tree branches as well.
Gutter Cleaning
Once you're finished cleaning the roof, it's time to move on to the gutter system. Put on a pair of gloves, because this part can get dirty. Use your hands or a small garden trowel to scoop out the debris. If there's significant buildup you may need to use a hose with good water pressure or a pressure washer to dislodge the debris.
Inspect Downspout Elbows
The downspout elbows where there is a curve are a common spot for blockages. Unclip or unscrew the downspout elbow to see if there's a blockage that needs to be cleared out.
Inspect the Downspout Extension
Another place to look for blockages is the downspout extension that directs water away from the foundation. If you have a flip-up style downspout extension, make sure it's flipping down properly to allow for drainage.
Unclog the Gutter Downspouts
To unclog a gutter downspout after you clear the gutter debris you'll need a garden hose or power washer to flush everything out. If the downspout cleaning doesn't completely clear out clogs a handheld drum auger can be used to break up the remaining debris.

What Can Prevent Gutter Clogs From Forming
Now that you have the gutter system functioning properly, you probably don't want to have to worry about cleaning gutters again any time soon. There are some things you can do to keep gutters free of clogs.
Cut Tree Limbs Away From the Roof
Overhanging tree limbs are a major source of debris in gutters. To prevent clogs and premature roof damage, keep tree limbs trimmed back at least a foot away from the roof.
Install Gutter Guards
The top opening of gutters allows water to flow in along with a lot of debris. Adding gutter guards is the easiest and fastest solution for keeping vegetation and other debris out of the gutters while still allowing water to flow off the roof in a continuous stream.
A gutter guard is placed over the top of the gutters and fastened into place. There are several design options, so it's best to consult with a roofing professional to determine which type will work best for your property.
Clean Your Gutters and Roof Regularly
Even after installing gutter guards it's important to clean your gutters and roof regularly. It helps limit the amount of debris that can get in the system and clog things up.
